110th Running of the Indy 500

The Indianapolis 500 auto race traditionally is held on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. This year’s race will take place on May 24th for the 110th time. Known as “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing,” the Indy 500 consists of 200 laps around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s 2.5-mile oval track. Alex Palou won last year’s race for his first Indy 500 victory.

Indy 500 race signsFans from Around the World

Race fans from around the world make the trek to Indianapolis each year to take part in the festivities. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway has a permanent seating capacity of approximately 250,000, with the potential to host up to 400,000 total spectators when the infield seating is included.  Estimates for last year’s race placed the attendance at close to 350,000. This included 250,000 fans in the sold-out grandstands, as well as approximately 100,000 more in the infield general admission areas.

Tips for First Time Race Goers

Here are a few tips if you are attending the race for the first time.  For those who attend annually we’re sure you already have a game plan to make your day at the track an enjoyable one.

  1. For a great Indy 500 experience arrive at the track early to beat the traffic.  Gates open at 6 a.m.  Parking in the area fills quickly. There is also the option of taking the official IMS shuttle service that runs to the track from the airport and downtown.
  1. Bring a cooler (18”x14”x14” max, no glass) packed with food and water, and prepare for loud, sunny conditions with ear protection and sunscreen. The race is an all-day event, so pace yourself, explore the infield, and be in your seat by 11:00 am for pre-race ceremonies. Bring seat cushions or a backrest for the metal bleachers.
  2. Fans at Indy 500
Over 350,000 fans attend the Indy 500 each year.

Check the forecast for race day and plan accordingly. Mornings can be cool and afternoon sun is intense. If there is a chance of rain bring a poncho, although umbrellas are allowed if they don’t obstruct the views of other fans. You’ll also want to wear comfortable shoes and bring sunscreen and sunglasses. It is advisable to bring ear plugs. The roar of all 33 cars can be extremely loud.

  3. While there is no official dress code for the Indy 500 suites, Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) states that “admittance will be denied if clothing is considered offensive, disruptive, or unsuitable for any reason.” Long pants and closed-toe shoes are recommended by IMS.
  4. Drones, glass containers, pets, or fireworks are not permitted. Check the official IMS site for a full list.
  5. Many vendors take credit cards, but cash is helpful for tips, especially for the free, but tip-worthy, pedicabs.
  6. Bring a portable radio to listen to the IMS Radio Network to follow the race action.
  7. Expect it to take 2–3 hours to leave after the race; consider tailgating in the parking lot until traffic clears.
Bring Your Patience

The most important advice given by those who attend the race every year is to “bring your patience”.  With over 300,000 fans at the race, lines can be long and the traffic is heavy.  The other suggestion is to pace yourself, particularly with alcohol, and to stay hydrated if it is a hot day. Ideally these tips will allow you to have a great experience, and you’ll look forward to returning next year.
